Nu Rave Interviews Vinyl Junkie
We at Nu Rave have managed to get the legend that is Vinyl Junkie out of his studio for awhile to have a quick chat with us....

"I always love music from when I was a little kid… Grew up on Punk and then moved to hip-hop and then in 1989 I went to Ibiza and ended up staying there the whole summer. Came back… went to every rave I possibly could for the next 2 years and then..."

Vinyl Junkie

How did you get into the world of music?

I always love music from when I was a little kid… Grew up on Punk and then moved to hip-hop and then in 1989 I went to Ibiza and ended up staying there the whole summer. Came back… went to every rave I possibly could for the next 2 years and then decided I wanted to be on the other side of the turntables. Started putting on a night in Bristol at a club called Fairways… I would turn up at all the travellers free parties where I would really have to fight to get them to let me play, but eventually they accepted me as one of the regulars. Then got a residency at a proper rave where I actually got paid! “Vibes Alive”. This led to me getting booked at Universe…

The all important DJ name, has this always been your DJ name, and how was it thought up?

The name came from a flyer I picked up in 1989 for some dodgey east London warehouse party called YOU KNOW THE SCORE.  There were no DJ names listed on the flyer at all. But under attractions it said something along the lines of: Laser Show, 100k Rig, cutmasters, vinyl junkies, exotic dancers etc. I thought “Vinyl Junkie” yeah I like that… If I ever became a DJ that would be my name…

• We at Nu Rave have just added your new sub label “Warehouse Wax Digital” to our shop. Tell us about how Warehouse Wax started?

I was doing a bit of work for Darkus who is a painter and decorator by trade. We were in some flat in Eastville in Bristol… Refurbing it after it had been trashed by the junkies who lived there before… It was a right shit-hole, blood squirted up the walls and allsorts... Anyway we were listening to some old skool and Darkus said… wouldn’t it be wicked if people started making music like this again… I said well fuck it, lets do it man… I rang Austin, booked a day in the studio and we went up there the following weekend and made “All Night”. Austin thought it was hilarious to be making hardcore again… Warehouse Wax was already established as an online record shop so we just used the name for our label.

• This is always a good question for a (not to sound rude) older DJ. What stlyes of music have you liked playing over the years?

Well I started off with old hardcore… When the music split I tried to go the drum and bass route for a while but wasn’t really feeling it. So I started to play Happy hardcore. I got bored with this in about 98-99 I think as it just got too cheesey for me. Didn’t do anything for a while and then started playing Hard House. This soon became stale as well. So in about 2001 we launched Absolute Old Skool and I started to get loads of bookings to play old skool again.
